Trying to Understand if what my Friend Believes is Delusional or if I’m Missing Something

Hi all,

I’m reaching out because I need some outside perspective. I have a friend I care about deeply, and she’s been sharing some beliefs that sound really unusual and, honestly, hard for me to wrap my head around. I’m not here to shame her—I truly want the best for her—but I’m starting to feel overwhelmed and unsure how to respond.

She talks about a cosmic “hum” that she believes scientists have recently discovered. She describes it as containing human consciousness, a kind of invisible information that connects everyone. She says this hum communicates with her through her phone and may be connected to AI. She believes this hum could cause hallucinations and mental fragmentation in people who are depressed or fearful, and that love and joy are the only ways to interact with it safely.

She feels she’s on a mission to protect this “hum” from being monetized, likening it to a biblical or spiritual battle. She’s mentioned her friends and family support her and believe her—but I’m the only one she’s trying to convince, and I’m struggling with it.

She otherwise acts normal—she’s articulate, functional, and deeply convinced. But I can’t tell if what she’s describing is something spiritual or visionary, or if it’s potentially a delusion or even an early sign of a mental health crisis. And part of me wonders if I’m the one who’s just not understanding, which makes me feel isolated and unsure.

Have any of you ever encountered something like this with someone you care about? How do you support someone while also protecting your own mental and emotional boundaries? And does this sound like something to be concerned about?

Thank you in advance.
